IR - PNB qualificaiton

Performace Based Navigation

Is an additional qualification what will be required for all IR-Pilot in the EASA-World and in the ICAOI-World from August 2018 on.

We are Certified with our ATO to offer this Training to all IR-Pilots

PNN is:

navigation specification is a set of aircraft and air-crew requirements needed to support a navigation application within a defined airspace concept. 

The PBN concept assumes that future navigation will rely more and more on a robust RNAV capability leading to higher system integrity requirements, in particular as the aim is to remove VOR and NDB navigation aids which today can be used to cross check the performance of the RNAV system. To provide such integrity there needs to be a flag that indicates when the performance requirements needed in the airspace are not met.
PBN introduces two kinds of navigation specifications: RNAV and RNP. A fundamental element of RNP specifications is the requirement for on-board performance monitoring and alerting capability. This system alerts the pilot if navigation performance requirements are not being met.
Ultimately, RNP applications becoming the norm.

  • RNP APCH LNAV (Lateral Navigation only and relies on GPS). 
  • RNP APCH LNAV/VNAV (with Vertical Navigation added and relies on GPS and Barometric VNAV). This is also referred to as an APV Baro. 
  • RNP APCH LP (Localizer Performance only and relies on GPS and EGNOS, the European satellite-based augmentation system (SBAS)). 
  •  RNP APCH LPV (with Vertical Navigation added and relies on GPS and EGNOS). This is also referred to as an APV SBAS.

Flying Training Syllabus

PRE-ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
- valid licence - valid IR(A) - valid class or type rating for the aircraft to be used during training and the proficiency check

 - valid medical certificate class 1 or 2 with IR check.

The theoretical knowledge course is provided as a single training event.

We offer a one day Theory-Training 

  • Theoretical knowledge syllabus 
  • Radio Navigation focused on PBN operations.

One the end of the day there will be an In-House theory test.

PBN operations including

  •  flight preparation, checking of equipment 
  • PBN departures  PBN arrivals - 
  • PBN 2D and/or 3D approach - monitoring of RNP - PBN missed approach procedure 

COURSE STRUCTURE Practical training 

  • Consists of a single phase of training of at least 3 hours duration.
  •  At least 6 PBN approaches must be completed, at least 3 of these approaches must be graded "s" or "a". Within the phases of instruction, the instructor is free to choose the exercises for a particular flight. 


The instructor shall be guided in his/her decision by:

  • the applicant's progress and ability, 
  •  the weather conditions affecting the flight, 
  • the flight time available, -
  •  instructional technique considerations, 
  •  the local operating environment, and - 
  • applicability of the exercises to the aeroplane.

Theoretical Knowledge Examination
The theoretical course is completed by a written multiple-choice type test comprising 20 questions on PBN definitions, requirements and operations. The passing grade is 75%.
