IMC - Rating, UK only


IMC - Rating, UK only

It entitles Pilots to fly in special conditions in the UK airspace. 


  • May fly as pilot in command, in UK airspace only ‐ - out of sight of the surface - in a control zone on a special VFR clearance,
  • with a flight visibility less than 10km but not less than 3 km. -
  • in IMC, when outside controlled airspace -
  • during take ‐ off and landing with a flight visibility, below cloud, of at least 1800 metres.

  • Physiological Factors 
  • Flight Instruments 
  • Aeronautical Information Service 
  • Flight Planning 
  • Privileges of the IMC Rating

The theoretical study can be done by self-study back home.

But we suggest in any case some ground school for the IMC and for the preparation for the written exams.

Flight Training

  • 15 hours dual instrument flying training of which up to 2 hours may be in an approved simulator 

Not less than 10 of the 15 hours must be flown by sole reference to instruments (simulated, using a hood or fogless or actual)

Details and Requirements

Requirements to start the IMC training

  • Holding a valid PPL with an SEP
  • 25 hours experience as an airplane pilot since date of application for their PPL (A) 
  • The 25 hours must include 10 hours PIC of which 5 hours must be cross country flights 
  • A Flight Radiotelephony Operators License (FRTOL)

IMC rating course flying (15 hours) may be included in the 25 hours experience 

Time frame

the training can be done in about one week.
